English Language Development - ELD 1, ELD 2, and ELD 3

Hello everyone, welcome to my page. My name is Miriam Contreras and I am the ELD 1, ELD 2, and ELD 3 teacher. I graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with a degree in Political Science and Education. I received my masters degree from Loyola Marymount University (LMU) in Bilingual Elementary Education. The following is a brief overview of what students engage in while in my classroom. 

ELD 1 Course Description:This is a beginner English Language Development class. This class will allow students to develop Basic English vocabulary and grammatical structures so they can successfully communicate. Students will develop literary and analytical skills that will help them be successful in future courses. In this course we will use the INSIDE National Geographic curriculum. We will also use online programs such as i-Ready, Newsela Star Fall, Read Theory, Brain Pop, Rosetta Stone, Storyline Online, and Duolingo to aid students in their English language acquisition journey. 

ELD 2 Course Description: This ELD course will support students in developing their English proficiency. The goal of this ELD course is to support your student in reclassifying.  In this course, students will be guided in ways that further develop their skills, abilities, and knowledge in literacy and language. Students will develop literary and analytical skills that will help them become strong readers, proficient writers, and effective communicators. Students will demonstrate independence as deliberate readers, knowledgeable and proficient writers, and effective communicators. In this course we will use programs such as i-Ready, Newsela, Star Fall, Read Theory, Brain Pop, Rosetta Stone, Storyline Online, and Duolingo to aid students.

ELD 3 Course Description: This English Language Development course is designed as a transitional intermediate level course for limited English proficient students. Students in this class are not yet independent at grade-level but are able to read, write, and demonstrate comprehension of some or most grade-level information. Students at this level require additional instructional support. In this course, students will focus on strengthening their literary and analytical skill. Students will demonstrate independence as deliberate readers, knowledgeable and proficient writers, and effective communicators. In this course we will use the McGraw Hill StudySync Designated ELD curriculum. We will also use online programs such as i-Ready, Newsela, Read Theory, Brain Pop, Rosetta Stone, Storyline Online, and Duolingo to aid students.

 

Throughout the year students will work on developing the four language domains; listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills:

Listening: Students will listen to English from native speakers via their teacher and other media. They will also listen to English spoken by their peers.

Speaking: Students will have the daily opportunity to practice speaking in structured conversations with their peers. There will be several projects which will require the students to present oral information to the class using their newly acquired English skills.

Reading: Students will be reading a variety of modified texts with guidance and support from their teacher and peers. Students will learn various strategies to help them comprehend text in the English language. They will also learn analytical skills necessary to interpret both literature and images.

Writing: Students will write on a daily basis, practicing grammar structures and new vocabulary.

Technology: Students will use a variety of media resources in their class to support and enhance their learning experience (computers, audio, and video files).
